I am human. We give as much as we can and then it’s time. And for me, it’s time, he told a meeting of his Labor Party members. I don’t have enough in the tank for another four years. Ardern became prime minister in a coalition government in 2017 and then led her center-left Labor Party in an election three years later.

The next general election will be held on Saturday 14 October, Ardern revealed in her announcement in Napier on the country’s east coast. The prime minister said

She would continue to serve as an electorate MP until then.

Although recent polls showed a coalition of the center-right National and Act parties would win the election, Ardern said this was not the reason for her resignation.

I’m not going because I believe we can’t win the next election, but because I believe we can and will. I am leaving because with such a privileged job comes great responsibility.
