He started early education in his hometown and graduated form Kirori Mal College, University of Delhi (BS). His height is 6 ft 2 inch. He married to aya Bhaduri ​in 1973 and is the father of 2 children named Shweta and Abhishek.

He received numerous awards in his life including Padma Shri (1984), Padma Bhushan (2001), Legion of Honour (2007), Padma Vibhushan (2015), and Dadasaheb Phalke Award (2018). He was also elected as the Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha (31 December 1984 – July 1987)
